Behind the Canvas

Bill Beard has been passionate about drawing cartoons since he was 7 years old. His love for caricature art took off right after high school, when he began crafting personalized caricatures from photographs as thoughtful gifts. Soon, he ventured into live caricature drawing at local festivals and special events, honing his skills and becoming a familiar face at gatherings across the region. Bill’s live artwork is characterized by bold, expressive lines created with black Sharpie markers on paper, while his digital caricatures, crafted with a tablet and pen, are rich in color and offer an expanded array of artistic possibilities.

Bill studied at Culver-Stockton College and earned an Associate’s degree in Graphic Design from John Wood Community College. He has trained under renowned caricature artist Tom Richmond and is an active member of the International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA). For over 30 years, Bill illustrated a weekly editorial cartoon for his hometown newspaper. He also created a daily cartoon series, “Adventures of Marty and Turkey,” which delighted audiences on social media for more than a decade. In his free time, Bill enjoys traveling and cherishing moments with his beloved pets, Scruffy, Hunter, and Maggie.
